Please follow these instructions carefully to get started.

Setup

Before installing the FocusMode Chrome extension, please ensure:

• ✅ You have the Google Chrome browser installed
  • This study requires Chrome exclusively for using YouTube with FocusMode
  • Download Chrome
• ✅ You are signed in to YouTube in Chrome
  • (Guest and Incognito modes are not supported)
• ✅ You have your Prolific ID ready

Once everything is set, follow the installation steps below 👇

FocusMode Installation and Verification

1. Use Chrome

Make sure you're using Google Chrome throughout the entire study.

🚨 Before continuing...
📺 Please make sure you're signed in to YouTube on this Chrome browser ✅
(Guest and Incognito modes won’t work for this study.)

2. Download FocusMode

• Download Link: FocusMode Release
• The file will download automatically as focusmode-release.zip

3. Unzip the File

• Navigate to your Downloads folder

• Unzip the file:

  • Windows: Right-click → "Extract All..." → Extract
  • MacOS: Double-click the .zip file

4. Enable Developer Mode

• Open a new Chrome tab
• Go to chrome://extensions/
• Toggle Developer mode (top-right corner)
  

5. Load the Unpacked Extension

• On the same chrome://extensions/ page:

  • Click Load unpacked (top-left)

    

  • Select the folder you just unzipped named focusmode-release

    

  • 🎉 The extension should now be visible in your Chrome toolbar!

    

  • Optional: Pin FocusMode Extension to toolbar

  

Note: Please do not delete the focusmode-release folder during the study.

Final Step: Verification

1. Go to YouTube

2. Complete the Registration Pop-up Survey

   • Enter your Prolific ID
   • Answer the brief survey question
   • Submit
   

3. A Verification Code will appear on the screen

   • Click it to automatically copy the code
   

4. Return to the Prolific survey page

   • Paste your Verification Code to confirm your registration

🎯 You're All Set!

For the next 4 weeks, simply:

• Use YouTube as usual
• Respond to occasional pop-up surveys from the FocusMode extension

Optional Sections

Turning Off Chrome Extensions After Study

1. Go to chrome://extensions/
2. Toggle off the FocusMode extension

Optional: Cache Cleaning (For Previous Testers)
