Persistent installation ids

The app attempts to generate a UUID and store it for the duration of its residence on a device. I have seen many cases where a single installation reported multiple UUIDs, and I suspect this happens when the device loses power and can't even hibernate. 

Please investigate the current strategy and see if it can be made more robust.
