Tomcat 11 support

We have a number of applications using Sitemesh version 2 through 3 running great on Tomcat 9. We are trying to upgrade Tomcat to version 11 on Redhat Enterprise Linux 8, but all the pages just show up blank with no log messages.

I recreated the 'hello world' application from https://sitemesh.github.io/sitemesh-website/getting-started.html

It works as expected Tomcat 9 using JDK 21, but in Tomcat 11 using JDK21, when you try to open hello.htm, the browser just hangs and there is nothing in logs. Tried with latest versions of Chrome and Edge.

Is there some Tomcat setting or some advice to getting any version of Sitemesh running under Tomcat 11?

SpringBoot 4.x moves to Tomcat 11 by default, so, unless fixed, this issue will break Sitemesh usage in SpringBoot 4.x in default configuration when it is released.

You can test using a modification to:

For testing the example, I set id 'org.springframework.boot' version '3.3.4' to version '4.0.0-M1', and got the same outcome as @TheRealKevinBarrett.

You can work around it by downgrading the tomcat used in the example to 10.1:

implementation 'org.apache.tomcat.embed:tomcat-embed-jasper:10.1.44' // jsp
implementation 'org.apache.tomcat.embed:tomcat-embed-core:10.1.44'
implementation 'org.apache.tomcat.embed:tomcat-embed-el:10.1.44'

And then the sitemesh3 springboot example seems to work with SpringBoot 4.0.0-M1. However, the SpringBoot 4.0.0-M2 release notes do advise: "We do not recommend deploying Spring Boot 4.0 applications to a non-Servlet 6.1 compliant container.". Tomcat 10.1.x is only servlet spec 6.0, whereas Tomcat 11.x is servlet spec 6.1, so downgrading to use Tomcat 10.1.x with Spring 4.x is not a recommended workaround.

We are upgrading to Tomcat 10.1 currently along with Jakarta migration and would like to go directly for Tomcat 11, since Spring framework v7 release is near (our target) and it will require Servlet 6.1 anyway.

@MilosHavranek I plan to addressing compatibility once Spring 7 get's closer to release.

Gretty still does not offer Tomcat 11 support.

We're migrating a struts7 based app to tomcat 111 and this patch did the trick. Works perfectly now.
