Want unit testing, not just integration testing

Presently, some unit tests from the liballocs source masquerade as the integration test `lib_test`. It would be great to have a robust unit-testing capability and have these run as individual tests. 

I'm biased towards `gtest`, but anything could work, really. I don't see a point in devoting any time to this now, but it would improve the dev experience significantly.
