Add ability to invite users

It would be good to have a way to invite users to join the instance similar to how this is possible on Mastodon, allowing users to invite their friends or people they know to register on their instance even if signups are closed, or in the case of application based sign-ups, bypass the review process.

Similar to Mastodon it would record who the user invited so if a user abuses the feature the admin could remove the user's ability to invite users or ban then from the instance.

Note: When this gets started we'll first need to create a UI/UX ticket for the front-end design and user experience.

I'm thinking that all users get 20 invites, while those invites are pending they cannot send any more. Once people respond to the invite or the invite is revoked they get one of their invites back. This should be configurable via an env variable.

That sounds like a good idea, I feel like something like that should be configurable in the admin panel to set the number, some servers might want to allow more pending invites, some might want to allow less.

I could see that a ratelimit could be benifitial to reduce email spam.

Or i would do like 10 can be send per email per day and that the rest can be "Invited" over text for example discord dm where they can just share an referal text with an url.

Tildes has an interesting system where the invites don't get replenished unless asked for or an admin decides to replenish them. This might be interesting to implement though I'm not sure if there's a particular want.
