Remove (or allow removal of) =~ ligature

The =~ ligature is not appropriate for UNIX shells. Would it be possible to remove it, or for a user to remove it?

e.g.

export PATH=~/.local/bin:$PATH

There, the =~ does not mean "approximately equals".
