Just a suggestion but I followed some past posts about screen and byobu and it made me think about suggesting tmux.
I use tmux on Ubuntu and have been very happy with it.
I think it's power and simplicity compared to screen fits well with the vision of TurnKeyLinux.
tmux major features:
- A powerful, consistent, well-documented and easily scriptable command interface.
- A window may be split horizontally and vertically into panes.
- screen only allows horizontal splits by default
- tmux uses a client-server model which provides better performance than screen
This article summarizes the benefits of tmux well:

tmux's first FAQ answers the question "How is tmux different from GNU screen?"

Thanks for all your work on TurnKeyLinux and for your consideration of tmux.
