I think a main difference in GVA is that it has jump drives, autopilots, and docking. Docking two rovers in GVK is awkward at best, unless one is a flier. There's no jumping, and autopilots across terrain are impractical.

GVA doesn't really have those problems.

GVK has another problem, which is that everyone is close together, so the physics engine works a lot harder to do physics on player grids that it doesn't need to. In the old GV games, you needed lots of PMW turrets and so there were hundreds of grids on the server.

GVA might need that, but I think it's a little early to be sure.
