It was determined that on some systems (CentOS, in particular) glassfish 4 defaults to US-ASCII as the preferred encoding, and not UTF. Because of that, support for accented characters - and any other non-ASCII characters - get disabled unless the encoding is explicitly set to UTF8 on glassfish startup.
The solution is to use the /etc/init.d/glassfish startup file currently on dvn-build, dataverse-demo, etc.,
that contains the following lines:
LANG=en_US.UTF-8; export LANG
$ASADMIN start-domain domain1

• this will also be added to the installation documentation.

verified that using /etc/init.d/glassfish startup file from dvn-build solves the issue.
