This looks good overall. The one change needed is datasets/bySubject should call datasets/bySubject/toMonth/[currentMonth] instead of using its own code. I'm doing the change myself as I need to jump on this branch and do a bunch more metrics changes.

@matthew-a-dunlap is implementing these changes in #5475. I'm closing this PR and linking PR #5475 to issue #5398.
