cc @wesm. Perhaps this is an opportunity to clean up the existing APIs? They are a bit plethoric.

I agree a cleanup would be useful. Some of the APIs may still be needed but can be moved to an internal namespace. It's hard to satisfy the matrix of all use cases – for example both InputStream and RandomAccessFile APIs are required
