Drop support for old Python

Dropping support for EOL Python will tidy up the codebase and encourage people to use more secure features such as SSLContext (see #79).

I'd propose dropping support for anything below 3.8 although that ends relatively support soon (October 2024) so it might be better to go with <3.9.
