• Limit player fire rate, maybe make the gun automatic (holding mouse1 shoots repeatedly)
• Add bloom/spread when firing repeatedly
  • Maybe recoil
  • Maybe screen shake
• Add hit effects

An overheat mechanic could be cool here too. We could also try a timed reload like Alien Swarm or Gears of War to make it more interesting.

This would also be a good place to integrate with the movement, such as making it so you can only shoot while walking. One playtester suggested an aiming mode to make it more complex.
