Loosen overriding of comparison methods

This is a discussion issue intended to arrive at a decision about #2584. The PR there is not what we want but we do have some interest in allowing more flexibility for classes overriding comparisons, and there are some good points brought up in that PR (e.g. about returning non-bool values).
