Vaccines must be administered via injection #18073

This could just lead to a similar situation of 1u syringes being placed on the table in front of medbay, but that would at least make more sense than pills. |
or at least full 15u syringes where people are encouraged to just take one dose, similar to what often happens for viruses |
Either way, I do think this is a good PR |
I mean, that's logic from RL, in the year 2023. SS13 is set 500 years in the future, where there's been significant advances in literally every field? You literally have syringes the same size as IRL ones that can hold almost a full litre of liquid, and MMIs which are actually deceptionally simple for what they actually let a player do in game. (They function as permanent life-support, while letting it retain all of it's senses in an immobile package.) Like, IRL most medicines are aimed to support a body to heal on it's own accord, but in SS13 medicine that directly repairs tissue is like, commonplace? Like, a gunshot wound (which BTW isn't like Hollywood it's not just a funny tidy hole) can be fully repaired by swallowing a bicardicine pill in a few seconds, like the T1000 terminator? I don't even disagree with this change but the logic of "um you can't do it IRL" when this is true for almost every single SS13 medication or medical device is a bit silly. Oh and, I dunno if this article's credible or not, it's from CNET which is primairly a gadget oriented tech review site, so probably take it with a grain of salt - BUT - SS13 is after all a 'optimistic tech future' world that's literally based on articles like these. So, https://www.cnet.com/health/medical/covid-19-vaccines-you-can-drink-snort-or-inhale-could-be-the-future According to that, there's companies testing an orally dosed vaccine, who knows if it'll ever actually be given the OK, but still, such a thing isn't unlikely to exist in SS13 |
|
I mean, if you Google it there's a few articles about various people working on an oral vaccine, I'm no expert, though, but assuming some global catastrophe doesn't wipe out industry, I think it's pretty likely that we'd figure out a oral vaccine over the next 500 years. Maybe not today, maybe not in the next decade, but we didn't even have combustion engines 500 years ago. The 'tech levels' required for an oral vaccine don't even compare with the 'tech levels' required for all the other SS13 tech, though, so it's weird that anyone would even care about it when personal teleporters, energy shields, invisibility cloaks, bionic eye replacements that let you see through walls, bionic replacements/augments for every organ, etc etc. |

The arguments for not comparing to real life are valid and strong. Well done. That aside, I like the change for aesthetic and changing up the dynamic reasons. |

As per previous PR Jamie wants the reagent requirement for being cured to be upped, instead of this |
|
this is a different PR, jamie hasn't stated anything this time around, this PR is also far more widely accepted than the previous PR |
You can’t just reopen an identical PR and expect to ignore comments from the previous one. |
|
maint fight |
|
3 2 1 GO |
it's been a few months since then, conditions can change |
|
at least wait for the balance council to make a decision, jamie is no longer the be-all-end-all of balance like he used to be |
They can and they haven’t. Reopen this as a PR to increase the required amount of reagents to cure someone. |
|
For the record, several oral vaccines exist including the Rotavirus vaccine administered to every infant which must be taken orally and should never be taken through an injection. |
that's a completely different PR |
Hence why this one is closed |
|
bibby, please get your head out of your ass |
|
🍿 |
|
Just leave it alone please bibby, Jamie is a big boy who can close his own Jamie disapproved prs |
|
maybe bibby's asleep now |
|
Well, i tried |
|
Thats not how this works |

literally just #15251
0.1u pills to cure diseases is boring and makes little logical sense since vaccines shouldn't work when ingested
I literally worked at a covid vaccination site for a bit over a year, I was one of those weird guys asking questions that no sane person would, if you drank the vaccine, your stomach would break it down before it has any chance to take effect.
It needs to be injected intra-muscular to properly ensure it can properly get into the blood stream without being damaged in any way.
This gives medbay something to actually do that isn't just surgery
Also buffs traitor viros and sentient diseases as the entire station doesn't become immune in like 10 seconds now

tweak: Vaccines can only be injected, not eaten
