We want to be able to sort by "release date" in #3482 once #3628 and #3629 are complete. See also #3592 about making a facet out of "release date".

When dataverses and datasets have not yet been released, we plan to use "creation date" instead... so perhaps we should call it "Date" instead of "Release Date", at least for sorting.

My concern about having it say, "Date" is that label doesn't give any context as to what the date is referring to, could be release date, deposit date, production date, etc. Even if "Release Date" isn't technically correct for Dataverses since we are using creation date, the term Release Date still provides context to the user as to what the dates within the facet refer to.

I just changed the default sort from "Name (A-Z)" to "Release Date (Newest First)" but due to data problems (nulls) in #3806 we should expect odd "sort by release date" behavior from datasets and files. Dataverses should be fine.

About a week ago I changed the label to Oldest/Newest, changed the facet from "Release Date" to "Publication Date", and worked a bit on dataset sorting:

now Oldest/Newest and use new dataset.getMostRecentMajorVersionReleaseDa... · f4a1905 · IQSS/dataverse - f4a1905

That ticket is in QA but I started using methods that were worked on in that ticket:

put dates on cards, use new file date methods #3701 · 43a2e38 · IQSS/dataverse - 43a2e38

Tested on 5/13

Newest/oldest works for dv's, datasets, files, all 3, and facets.
