Summary

This PR introduces a new keyboard shortcut Ctrl+O to expand and collapse large paste placeholders ([Pasted Text: X lines]) in the input prompt. It also adds a discoverability hint when a large paste occurs and updates the documentation to reflect these changes.

Ctrl+O.expand.paste.mp4

Details

  • The shortcut expands the placeholder under the cursor, collapses an expanded region if the cursor is inside it, or expands the first placeholder in the buffer if the cursor is elsewhere.
  • Added a hint message "Press Ctrl+O to expand pasted text" when a paste exceeds the large paste thresholds.
  • Updated docs/cli/keyboard-shortcuts.md to document the new shortcut.

Related Issues

N/A

How to Validate

  1. Paste a large block of text (>5 lines or >500 characters) into the Gemini CLI prompt.
  2. Observe the placeholder [Pasted Text: X lines] and the hint message.
  3. Press Ctrl+O to expand it.
  4. Press Ctrl+O again to collapse it.
  5. Expand it and then type a character; observe that it detaches (becomes regular text).
  6. Verify that Double-click still works in alternate buffer mode.

Pre-Merge Checklist

  • Updated relevant documentation and README (if needed)
  • Added/updated tests (if needed)
  • Noted breaking changes (if any)
  • Validated on required platforms/methods:
    • MacOS
      • npm run

Hi @jackwotherspoon, thank you so much for your contribution to Gemini CLI! We really appreciate the time and effort you've put into this.

We're making some updates to our contribution process to improve how we track and review changes. Please take a moment to review our recent discussion post: Improving Our Contribution Process & Introducing New Guidelines.

Key Update: Starting January 26, 2026, the Gemini CLI project will require all pull requests to be associated with an existing issue. Any pull requests not linked to an issue by that date will be automatically closed.

Thank you for your understanding and for being a part of our community!

Summary of Changes

Hello @jackwotherspoon, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request significantly enhances the user experience for handling large pasted text in the CLI by introducing a new Ctrl+O keyboard shortcut. This shortcut allows users to easily expand and collapse paste placeholders, providing better control over the input area. Additionally, a helpful hint message is now displayed upon large pastes, guiding users to this new functionality and improving overall discoverability.

Highlights

  • New Keyboard Shortcut (Ctrl+O): Introduced Ctrl+O to expand and collapse large paste placeholders ([Pasted Text: X lines]) in the input prompt, providing better control over large text inputs.
  • Paste Hint Message: Added a discoverability hint, 'Press Ctrl+O to expand pasted text', which appears when a large paste (exceeding 5 lines or 500 characters) occurs, guiding users to the new functionality.
  • Dynamic Expansion Logic: Implemented tryTogglePasteExpansion in InputPrompt.tsx to intelligently expand/collapse placeholders. It prioritizes the placeholder under the cursor, collapses an already expanded region, or expands the first placeholder if the cursor is elsewhere.
  • Documentation Update: The new Ctrl+O shortcut has been officially documented in docs/cli/keyboard-shortcuts.md.
  • Robust Paste Handling: Ensured that expanded paste regions are correctly managed and 'detached' (converted to regular text) when subsequent edits are made, preventing unexpected behavior.

Code Review

This pull request introduces a Ctrl+O shortcut to expand and collapse large paste placeholders, along with a hint message for discoverability. The implementation is solid and well-tested. I've added a couple of comments regarding code duplication that could be addressed to improve long-term maintainability.
