Summary

Adds a user-configurable UI setting to hide the ? for shortcuts hint while preserving all existing shortcuts panel behavior.

Details

  • Added new boolean setting: ui.showShortcutsHint (default true).
  • Wired Composer to conditionally render ShortcutsHint based on settings.merged.ui.showShortcutsHint.
  • Kept the existing ? behavior unchanged in InputPrompt.
  • Updated settings schema tests and UI behavior tests.
  • Regenerated settings schema/docs and updated keyboard shortcuts docs.

Related Issues

Related to #18535

How to Validate

  1. Set ui.showShortcutsHint to false in settings.json.
  2. Start Gemini CLI and verify the ? for shortcuts hint text is hidden.
  3. With empty input, press ? and verify the shortcuts panel still opens.
  4. Run:
    • npm run test --workspace @google/gemini-cli -- src/ui/components/Composer.test.tsx src/ui/components/InputPrompt.test.tsx src/config/settingsSchema.test.ts
    • npm run lint --workspace @google/gemini-cli
    • npm run typecheck --workspace @google/gemini-cli

Hi @LyalinDotCom, thank you so much for your contribution to Gemini CLI! We really appreciate the time and effort you've put into this.

We're making some updates to our contribution process to improve how we track and review changes. Please take a moment to review our recent discussion post: Improving Our Contribution Process & Introducing New Guidelines.

Key Update: Starting January 26, 2026, the Gemini CLI project will require all pull requests to be associated with an existing issue. Any pull requests not linked to an issue by that date will be automatically closed.

Thank you for your understanding and for being a part of our community!

Summary of Changes

Hello @LyalinDotCom, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request enhances the user experience by providing a new configuration option to control the visibility of the "? for shortcuts" hint in the Gemini CLI. This allows users who are already familiar with the shortcuts to declutter their interface, while ensuring that the underlying shortcut functionality remains fully accessible. The change focuses on UI customization without altering core interaction patterns.

Highlights

  • New User Setting: Introduced a new boolean setting, ui.showShortcutsHint, which allows users to hide the "? for shortcuts" hint UI element.
  • Conditional UI Rendering: The Composer component now conditionally renders the ShortcutsHint based on the value of the ui.showShortcutsHint setting.
  • Preserved Functionality: The core functionality of pressing ? on an empty prompt to open the shortcuts panel remains unchanged, regardless of whether the hint UI is displayed.
  • Documentation and Tests: Updated keyboard shortcuts and settings documentation, regenerated settings schema, and added comprehensive tests for the new setting and its UI behavior.
Changelog
  • docs/cli/keyboard-shortcuts.md
    • Added a note clarifying that the ui.showShortcutsHint setting can hide the hint text without affecting the keyboard behavior for opening the shortcuts panel.
  • docs/cli/settings.md
    • Added a new entry for ui.showShortcutsHint to the settings table, including its description and default value.
  • docs/get-started/configuration.md
    • Included ui.showShortcutsHint in the detailed configuration documentation, specifying its type, description, and default value.
  • packages/cli/src/config/settingsSchema.test.ts
    • Added new test cases to verify the properties of the showShortcutsHint setting within the settings schema, such as its type, category, default value, and showInDialog status.
  • packages/cli/src/config/settingsSchema.ts
    • Integrated the showShortcutsHint boolean setting into the main SETTINGS_SCHEMA definition, complete with its label, category, default value (true), description, and showInDialog property.
  • packages/cli/src/ui/components/Composer.test.tsx
    • Added a test to confirm that the ShortcutsHint component is not rendered when the ui.showShortcutsHint setting is set to false.
  • packages/cli/src/ui/components/Composer.tsx
    • Modified the rendering logic for the ShortcutsHint component to be conditional on settings.merged.ui.showShortcutsHint, ensuring it only appears when the setting is enabled.
  • packages/cli/src/ui/components/InputPrompt.test.tsx
    • Added a test to ensure that pressing ? on an empty prompt still successfully opens the shortcuts help panel, even when the ui.showShortcutsHint setting is false.
  • schemas/settings.schema.json
    • Added the showShortcutsHint property to the JSON schema for settings, defining its title, description, markdown description, default value (true), and type (boolean).

Code Review

This pull request introduces a new UI setting, ui.showShortcutsHint, allowing users to hide the '? for shortcuts' hint. The implementation is clean and well-tested, correctly updating the settings schema, documentation, and UI components. The new tests effectively verify both the new functionality and ensure that the existing keyboard shortcut behavior for opening the shortcuts panel remains unchanged. The changes are solid and I have no concerns.
